Volunteer

Volunteer at AuroOrchard

We offer a welcoming environment for learners, researchers, and seekers who wish to help us and learn more about the land, food, culture, and themselves. We respect each person’s journey and interests and are open to proposals for how their time at the farm can be meaningful for them and the farm. Work commitments vary according to each individual’s interests and capacity. We only ask that volunteers be sincere, responsible, and respectful with the team and the work.

What does a regular day at the farm look like?

Farm work is highly dynamic and unpredictable. We have routines of harvesting, weeding, planting, nursery work, poultry work, irrigation and so on, but we also reorganise based on daily necessities. In general, for volunteers, the daily work could vary from weeding, making compost, adding compost to beds, helping with harvesting and organising the harvest for baskets, planting, organising, pruning and mulching. The work also depends on the interest of the volunteers and for how long they are working on the farm. Let us know if you are interested in any particular aspect of farming and we will try to integrate you as best as possible.

Accommodation

Farm accommodation is available for volunteers who are willing to commit at least 5 hours of work every day. If you expressed interest in volunteering with us and chose the option of staying on the farm, our team will get back to you about the options available.

You can also explore booking a guesthouse in Auroville through Auroville Guesthouses. We recommend Serendipity Guest House and International House, which offer discounts for long-term AuroOrchard volunteers.

Location

AuroOrchard is located just outside Auroville’s main area, about a 15–20 minute cycle ride from most guesthouses.

Food

We offer breakfast made mostly from fresh farm produce to all our volunteers.
For volunteers staying on the farm, the community kitchen is open for them to cook their meals. The kitchen has some basic ingredients for common use. For the rest, the volunteers can get a basket from the farm with fresh produce or buy from the markets close to the farm.
There are also some simple and affordable restaurants and dhabas close to the farm that volunteers can visit.

Kitchen

The community kitchen is a shared space used by all resident volunteers as well as for cooking breakfast for the team and our food processing activity. People using the kitchen are expected to maintain high standards of hygiene and consideration of the space as well as other team members.
